Editor’s Note: This article was originally published in 2008 following PaladinID’s participation in the MassPlastics trade show in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. While the event itself is part of our company’s history, the labeling challenges facing plastics manufacturers continue to evolve. We’ve updated this article with current best practices and additional resources for today’s manufacturers.
In 2008, PaladinID had the opportunity to exhibit at the MassPlastics trade show, where we met with manufacturers, molders, and suppliers serving the plastics industry throughout New England. The conversations we had then are remarkably similar to the ones we have today.
Plastics manufacturers continue to face demanding identification requirements. Whether producing injection-molded parts, extruded products, consumer packaging, or industrial components, accurate labeling remains essential for inventory control, product traceability, quality assurance, and customer compliance.
Labeling Challenges in Plastics Manufacturing
Plastic products often present unique labeling challenges that require more than a standard paper label.
Common considerations include:
- Low-surface-energy plastics that can be difficult to label.
- Curved or textured surfaces.
- Exposure to oils, mold-release agents, or chemicals.
- Heat generated during manufacturing processes.
- Long-term product identification requirements.
- Barcode durability throughout shipping and handling.
Selecting the proper combination of face stock, adhesive, ribbon, and printer helps ensure labels remain attached and readable throughout the product’s lifecycle.
Traceability Is More Important Than Ever
Today’s manufacturers are expected to track products throughout production and the supply chain.
Barcode labels support:
- Work-in-process identification
- Finished goods tracking
- Lot and batch traceability
- Inventory management
- Shipping accuracy
- Customer and regulatory compliance
Reliable barcode labels help reduce manual data entry while improving visibility throughout manufacturing operations.

Choose Materials That Match the Application
Not every plastic surface behaves the same way.
Factors such as resin type, surface energy, temperature, and environmental exposure all influence label performance.
Depending on the application, manufacturers may benefit from:
- Durable synthetic label materials
- Specialty adhesives
- Thermal transfer printing
- Resin or wax-resin ribbons
- Custom label constructions
Our article on Zebra PolyPro4000T Labels: When Polypropylene Is the Right Choice for Barcode Durability explains why synthetic materials are often selected for more demanding applications.
Build a Reliable Identification System
Successful labeling involves more than selecting a label.
A complete solution considers:
- Label materials
- Adhesives
- Thermal printers
- Thermal transfer ribbons
- Barcode design
- Software integration
- Scanner compatibility
