Label Design Tips

Editor’s Note: This article began as a 2008 update on a difficult customer application involving an aging industrial label printer. Looking back today, it represents much more than a printer replacement project. It tells the story of how solving one difficult problem led to one of PaladinID’s longest and most valued customer relationships.

One of the most rewarding parts of our business isn’t selling labels or printers—it’s helping customers solve problems that others have been unable to solve.

More than 18 years ago, PaladinID was contacted by a manufacturer facing a critical labeling challenge.

Their production process depended on a Markem LP 8400, an industrial color label printer that had served them well for many years. Unfortunately, the printer had reached the end of its product life. Replacement parts were becoming difficult to find, supplies were increasingly limited, and manufacturer support was no longer available.

For most companies, replacing the printer would have been the obvious solution.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t that simple.

The Real Challenge

The customer wasn’t just printing labels.

They were producing durable color labels for an outdoor application that had to withstand years of exposure to sunlight and harsh environmental conditions.

Any replacement solution had to meet extremely demanding durability requirements.

Finding a printer was only part of the project.

Finding inks and label materials capable of surviving long-term outdoor exposure proved to be the real challenge.

Months of Testing

Over the next 14 months, PaladinID worked closely with manufacturing partners to evaluate new label materials, printing technologies, and flexographic ink formulations.

Early testing was disappointing.

Many ink systems performed well indoors but quickly faded during accelerated weather testing.

Repeatedly, promising solutions failed to meet the customer’s demanding performance requirements.

Rather than settling for “good enough,” we continued searching.

Persistence Pays Off

Eventually, we identified a combination of materials and printing technology that demonstrated significant improvements during accelerated Weather-Ometer testing.

It was a major milestone.

More importantly, it gave our customer confidence that there was a long-term path forward for their labeling application.

Projects like this remind us that successful labeling solutions are rarely about a single product.

They’re about understanding the complete application and finding the right combination of printer, label material, adhesive, ink, and testing requirements.

More Than a Successful Project

Looking back today, this project became far more than a technical success.

It became the beginning of one of PaladinID’s most important customer relationships.

More than 18 years later, we’re still working together.

That relationship wasn’t built by selling a printer.

It was built by listening, testing, collaborating, and refusing to give up until we found the right solution.

Lessons Learned

Every labeling application is different.

The right solution often requires balancing:

  • Label materials
  • Printing technology
  • Environmental durability
  • Adhesives
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Production efficiency
  • Long-term reliability

That’s why we believe successful labeling projects begin with understanding the application—not simply selecting a product.
