Editor’s Note: This article was originally published in 2008 after PaladinID helped a customer evaluate an inline barcode quality solution. While printer technology and verification equipment have advanced considerably, manufacturers still face the same fundamental question: Is barcode validation enough, or is full barcode verification required? We’ve updated this article to explain the differences and help businesses choose the right solution.

In today’s fast-paced manufacturing and distribution environments, barcode quality is critical. A poorly printed barcode can lead to shipping errors, inventory discrepancies, rejected products, customer chargebacks, production delays, and unnecessary costs.

For many organizations, the next question is whether they need barcode validation, barcode verification, or both.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they are not the same thing.

A Real-World Customer Challenge

Several years ago, PaladinID worked with a customer that needed to ensure every barcode leaving the production line could be successfully scanned by their customers.

Unlike another project where products moved continuously on a conveyor, this operation printed labels in peel-and-present mode before operators manually applied them to each product. A traditional inline barcode verification system was not the best fit for their workflow.

Instead, we evaluated printer-based barcode validation technology that could inspect each barcode as it was printed, helping identify poor-quality labels before they reached production.

The specific hardware available today has evolved, but the decision process remains remarkably similar.

Barcode Validation vs. Barcode Verification

Understanding the difference is the first step toward selecting the right solution.

Barcode ValidationBarcode Verification
Confirms a barcode can be read.Measures barcode quality against ANSI/ISO standards.
Often integrated into industrial printers or production equipment.Uses dedicated barcode verification equipment.
Identifies many common print-quality problems.Evaluates symbol contrast, modulation, defects, edge determination, and other quality metrics.
Lower implementation cost.Higher investment but provides formal quality grading.
Ideal for many manufacturing environments.Often required for regulated industries and customer compliance programs.

Both technologies improve barcode quality, but they serve different purposes.

When Barcode Validation Makes Sense

For many manufacturing operations, printer-based barcode validation offers an excellent balance between quality control and cost.

Typical applications include:

  • Manufacturing
  • Distribution
  • Consumer products
  • Warehouse labeling
  • Work-in-process identification
  • General product labeling

Validation systems can automatically inspect each printed barcode and respond if a problem is detected.

Depending on the equipment, the system may:

  • Reprint the label.
  • Pause the printer.
  • Stop production.
  • Alert the operator.
  • Record quality information for later review.

This helps prevent unreadable labels from entering the production process.

When Full Barcode Verification Is Required

Some industries require more than confirming that a barcode scans.

Medical devices, pharmaceuticals, automotive suppliers, aerospace manufacturers, and organizations following customer-specific barcode specifications often require formal ANSI or ISO barcode grading.

In these situations, dedicated barcode verification equipment provides objective measurements that support quality programs and compliance requirements.

If your customers require barcode grades or compliance documentation, verification—not validation—is typically the appropriate solution.

Barcode Quality Starts Long Before Inspection

Neither validation nor verification can compensate for poor barcode design or incorrect materials.

Reliable barcode performance begins with:

  • Proper label materials
  • Compatible thermal transfer ribbons
  • Well-maintained printers
  • Clean printheads
  • Correct printer settings
  • Appropriate barcode size
  • Proper quiet zones
  • Accurate source data

Our guide on How to Improve Barcode Accuracy explains how these factors work together to produce consistently readable barcodes.

Selecting the Right Barcode Quality Solution

The best solution depends on your application.

Questions to consider include:

  • Do your customers require ANSI or ISO barcode grades?
  • Are you trying to prevent production errors or document compliance?
  • Is every label inspected or only samples?
  • What production speeds must the system support?
  • Are labels applied automatically or manually?
  • What barcode symbologies are being used?

Evaluating the complete labeling workflow helps determine whether barcode validation, barcode verification, or a combination of both provides the greatest value.
