Editor’s Note: This article was originally inspired by the introduction of a new thermal transfer overprinter in 2009. While printer models have evolved, Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) remains one of the most effective technologies for printing variable information directly onto flexible packaging.
What Is a Thermal Transfer Overprinter?
If you’ve ever purchased a bag of coffee, frozen vegetables, medical supplies, or snack foods, you’ve probably noticed lot numbers, expiration dates, barcodes, or production codes printed directly on the package. Many of these packages are printed using a Thermal Transfer Overprinter (TTO).
Unlike a traditional barcode label printer that prints on pressure-sensitive labels, a TTO printer prints directly onto flexible packaging materials as products move through the packaging line. This allows manufacturers to print variable information without applying a separate label, increasing efficiency while maintaining excellent print quality.
Where Are Thermal Transfer Overprinters Used?
Thermal Transfer Overprinters are commonly used to print on flexible packaging materials including Tyvek®, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), paper, flexible films, pouches, and bags.
They are widely used in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, medical device, cosmetic, and consumer packaged goods industries where manufacturers need to print changing information directly on the package during production.
What Information Can Be Printed?
A Thermal Transfer Overprinter is ideal for printing:
- Lot numbers
- Batch numbers
- Expiration and Best-By dates
- Time and date codes
- Barcodes
- QR Codes
- Variable product information
Because the information is generated electronically, changes can be made instantly without replacing printing plates or interrupting production.
Why Manufacturers Choose TTO Technology
Thermal Transfer Overprinting offers several advantages over traditional coding methods.
Benefits include:
- Crisp, high-resolution print
- Excellent barcode readability
- High-speed production
- Easy variable data changes
- Reduced maintenance
- Lower operating costs
Many modern TTO systems also include ribbon-saving technology that helps reduce ribbon consumption and operating expenses over the printer’s life.
Is a Thermal Transfer Overprinter Right for Your Application?
If your production line uses flexible packaging and requires printing expiration dates, lot numbers, barcodes, or other variable information directly onto the package, a Thermal Transfer Overprinter may be the ideal solution.
However, if your application requires pressure-sensitive labels that are applied to products, cartons, or pallets, a traditional barcode label printer is usually the better choice.
Selecting the proper technology depends on your packaging materials, production environment, durability requirements, and long-term business goals.
