When 3M approached PaladinID in the mid-1990s, they had a specific challenge at one of their wire shrink wrap manufacturing facilities: they needed a reliable on-demand labeling system that could handle long-format labels in a tough warehouse environment.

After a full review of their labeling process, we designed a custom solution around four different label sizes, optimized for the unique demands of shrink wrap wire identification. Because of the label length, we recommended fanfold labels instead of traditional rolls—a critical change that prevented curling, improved print accuracy, and made feeding into the printer easier.

To protect the labels from dust and debris common in an industrial setting, we went a step further and designed a custom box and printer stand. The printer was positioned above the labels, which were housed below in a protected compartment. This setup not only preserved label quality but also kept operations running smoothly without frequent interruptions.

For the hardware, we selected the Zebra thermal transfer printer, known for its industrial reliability, precision, and ease of use. These printers were installed in 1995—and they’re still running strong today. It’s a testament to how a well-planned labeling system, combined with quality equipment and materials, can stand the test of time.
