Editor’s Note: This article was inspired by a 2008 post about a MythBusters television episode featuring RFID technology. Since then, RFID has matured significantly and become an important tool for inventory management, asset tracking, retail, healthcare, and manufacturing. This updated article explains where RFID excels—and where traditional barcodes still provide the best solution.
For more than two decades, RFID has been promoted as the technology that would replace barcodes. While RFID has become a valuable tool in many industries, the reality is that it hasn’t replaced barcodes. Instead, the two technologies often work together to improve visibility, accuracy, and efficiency.
The key is understanding when each technology makes the most sense.
What Is RFID?
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) uses small electronic tags that communicate with a reader using radio waves. Unlike traditional barcodes, RFID tags do not require a direct line of sight to be read.
Depending on the application, multiple RFID tags can often be read simultaneously, making the technology well suited for high-volume tracking environments.
How Is RFID Different from Barcodes?
Both technologies identify products, assets, or inventory, but they do so in different ways.
Barcodes
- Lower cost per label
- Proven and widely adopted
- Ideal for most labeling applications
- Require a scanner to “see” the barcode
RFID
- No direct line of sight required
- Multiple tags can often be read at once
- Additional information can be stored on the tag
- Higher initial investment
Neither technology is universally better. The best choice depends on your operational requirements.
Where RFID Excels
RFID is commonly used for:
- Warehouse inventory
- Retail inventory management
- Healthcare equipment tracking
- Manufacturing work-in-process
- Returnable container tracking
- Asset management
- Access control
- Tool tracking
In these environments, RFID can reduce manual scanning while improving inventory visibility.
When Barcodes Are Still the Better Choice
For many organizations, traditional barcode labeling continues to provide the best return on investment.
Barcodes remain an excellent choice for:
- Product labeling
- Shipping labels
- Compliance labeling
- Manufacturing
- Inventory control
- Warehouse operations
- Retail pricing
Barcode technology is reliable, economical, and supported by virtually every business system.
Should You Invest in RFID?
That’s one of the most common questions we hear.
The answer depends on factors such as:
- The value of the assets being tracked
- Labor costs
- Required inventory accuracy
- Read range requirements
- Existing software systems
- Budget
- Expected return on investment
In many cases, a hybrid solution using both barcodes and RFID provides the greatest flexibility.
